What does an Essential tier assessment look like for a supplier — and why is it so short?
The Essential questionnaire is a rapid adequacy screen — typically 9–13 questions depending on market. Each question is binary: either the supplier has something in place (Adequate) or they do not (Needs Attention). There is no maturity scoring and no detailed risk band output.
It is intentionally short because it is designed for lower-risk suppliers, new supplier onboarding, and full supply base coverage where depth is less important than breadth. Suppliers flagged as Needs Attention in any area may be escalated to a Standard or Comprehensive assessment in a future cycle.
If a supplier asks why their questionnaire is short, reassure them this is correct for their classification and does not reflect a lesser level of care.
